In Catan, trade is fundamental. A player may not have a type of resource they need at that moment. In this case, during a phase of their turn, they can exchange their resources with other players. The cost of the exchange depends on what suits each player and can vary throughout the game depending on each player's interests. Negotiating wisely is one of the keys to winning in Catan! Another option is to have a settlement in a port, which are located on the edges of the board where the costs are marked, or, if there's no other option, exchange four cards of one resource for one card of any other resource with the bank. Each game depends on a combination of hex placement, settlements, numbers, and the players. The dice have very little impact on the outcome of a game because this is the sum of each player's resource management decisions. The player who best manages their resources wins the game.
In Catan, you win with victory points, which are generated when players place settlements, cities, build the longest route or the largest army, or when they purchase development cards that can award victory points. Although many factors can affect a game, it's a very fast-paced and easy-to-explain game, with few mechanics and a limited number of decisions to make. The decisions players make usually have an immediate effect and directly impact the path to victory not only for the active player but also for the other players. In Catan, there is a lot of interaction between players. For example, when a player rolls a seven, they move their robber: a token on the board that prohibits resource generation in the hex where it's placed. Catan is perfectly balanced, so victories are won by very small margins, maintaining the tension of the game until the end.
